Gulf Oil Safety.............The Unwritten Rule..........

The one thing that you can depend on when you work in the gulf, for any oil company related concern.

A safety manual, that is as thick as any well written tome.

The manual is as much a guide line for new hires, as it is an insurance policy for the company. Every new hire must at least sign a form saying that they have read and understood all the rules contained in this 100-1000 page manual. Some companies have volumes of safety rules and regulations.

If you work on a supply vessel, or any vessel on the sea for that matter, you must also know "the rules of the road"....these are coast guard regulations for operation at sea.

"The rules of the road " regulations are strictly enforced. The company safety rules and regulations are enforced by convenience. When it suits the company or they are looking for a reason to "run a hand off"

they can always find a violation of the company safety rules.

Rules for safety are so lengthy they virtually cover everything from personal appearance, to, wearing a hard hat at all times and everything in between.

There are numerous safety meetings, meetings before an operation is performed, a safety meeting after an operation is performed, these safety meetings are for the sole purpose of improving safety, Notes are taken and everything is reported and recorded.

There are little plaques for safety everywhere, reminders of how many days of operation without an accident,or incident. Then there are safety bonus systems in place, if the crew goes so many days without an accident or incident, then the crew gets a safety bonus an commendation for a job well done. Now what constitutes an accident or incident some times fall in a little gray area, depending on how close to a safety bonus the crew is. Thus leading to the unwritten rules.

ANY hand, regardless of job position, must report anything that they deem a safety hazard, this concern is discussed, evaluated, before the job proceeds. ANY hand may call off an operation or call for a shut down IF they notice any safety concern.

You no doubt have seen the survivors, ( on the Horizon rig that exploded in the gulf ) statements, by now that have been plastered all over the media and the statement that they have made relating to safety issues. The accusations they have voiced and you may be wondering, why the hell the job was not shut down.

The safety rules and regulations are written for the protection of the company more than they are written for the protection for the workers.

I can not stress this enough, safety rules and regulations are enforced at the convenience of the company.

What the "Company Man" wants, the "Company Man" gets......always been that way....always going to be that way. UNLESS. These rig workers and hands take this small window of opportunity to speak out.

Why has it been this way for so long is beyond me. You would think by now that whistle blowers would be standing in line to be heard.

The "Company Man" controls the unwritten rule, he can have a hand run off at his whim, he controls the charter of operation of a vessel, with this type of power over operations, nothing will ever change as far as safety concerns in the oil field. Hell, they can even have a cook run off if they don't like the way he cooks white beans and rice, I have seen it and heard them laugh about it. Now I know I just reduced this to the ridiculous, BUT, that is the way it is and the way it always has been.

Fines DO NOT work, as everyone is aware of by now. The only way to correct this is to double the fines, enforce safety, but above all, when there is a documented, willful violation, of these safety rules and regulations, the "Company Man" should do prison time. After a time of strict enforcement, and prison time more than a mere threat, you may see, a new awakening for regard and respect for safety in the oil field, from these "Company Men", the way it stands now, it nothing more than extortion on their part by the way they operate.

Give the control back to the Rig owner,and the service companies, to make the decisions on behalf of their workers and hands. You will see much better safety performance and have a healthier atmosphere, from which to work.

The Good Ole Daze ! ! !

One thing i just do not get and I have heard it over and over my whole life.

They just don't build em like they use too.
This use to be only three dollars.
I can remember when.
People just don't act the same now days. (hmm?)
Where Have their manners gone?
What is happening to this place.

Man, I could go on and on but I won't. I was just kickin around things in my mind and started thinking about all this stuff, so what the hell, why not get it outta my head and into yours, LOL.

Houses just are not built like they use to be.

The old house had outside toilets that people would tip over, they were drafty and cold in the winter and a hot house in the summer. The plumbing was just coming into existence, so most of the joint leaked under the sinks and rotted out the floors.
Electricity, man they used these old wires that frayed easily, you ever been into an attic of an old house? The wiring looks like it was made with fur balls and spider webs.
The windows were thin sheets of glass, and they were always stuck.
The floors were cool though, solid wood floors, very pretty but seldom if ever insulated, so in the winter it felt like you were walking on a sheet of ice, if you were bare footed.
THANK GOD, they don't build houses like they use too.

Ever seen an attic fan, cool, oh yeah, practical, not hardly. I will take my central heat and air unit any day.

Strange ole Jess

There was an old man I knew, from the foot hills in Arkansas.

Many thought he was a little strange, me, I loved his stories.

He would tell of events that happened long ago, as if he had been there with a first hand account.

He was much too young to have either been living then, much less to have been at the site of the story.

Jess, was his name and he was married to my aunt Cynthy, they loved fishing and popcorn.

One morning while I was visiting, Jess invited me fishing, I was delighted and excited, Jess very seldom took anyone fishing with him, so I really felt special.

While fishing, Jess started telling me of an event that had happened in 1883. He said he didn't know how all of this happened but he knew it did.

A Wells Fargo line, was traveling from St.Louis to Little Rock, when it was pulled over by a group of bandits. There were only three passengers on board at the time, a young man returning home from a trip, a gambler that had lost all of his money in St.Louis, and a man from Scotland that seemed really out of sorts, probably drunk, as he had been sipping on something the whole trip.

Jess went on to tell me that it was really strange in so far as the stage driver was so calm, and none of the passengers were all that put out. They all remained so calm, as if they all knew that it was going to happen, that is except for the young man that was returning home to Little Rock.

He became very nervous and scared, he was so young, maybe in his early twenties.

The bandits asked for the strong box, without hesitation the driver threw it down. That strong box held gold coins, that were to go to a bank in Little Rock. Jess wasn't sure of the amount because none of the people had mentioned anything about it.

The bandits, turned the horse loose, took the weapons, loaded the strong box and rode away.

This incident had been bothering my uncle Jess for some time, he told me. Why were all the people so calm, except that youngun, why didn't the bandits shoot all the witnesses. He just couldn't make no sense outta it he said.

Strangest thing though of all, was, I see where they go to hide the strong box, where they bury it and all.

I see all the bandits gettin shot up by the posse that tracks em down and all, but no one goes to get that strong box, and well, it's just buried there by that ole oak tree only bout three feet in the ground.

Jess, went on, I know exactly where that place is, the ole oak tree, right there by Mahoneys' crossing, six feet from the creek, that ole strong box still sittin there.

Jess was acting really strange while he was telling the story, like he was in a different place, like the whole thing was happening right now, right in front of him, and this was spring time in 1953, one hundred and thirty years later. I was a little concerned about his mental state, and a little fearful.

I became curious, and decided to investigate, just to see if anything like this really happened.

I found out that a Wells Fargo stage coach had indeed been robbed at that time, and nothing was ever recovered.

The only problem was that it had occurred near Greers' landing, not Mahoney's crossing, which was ten miles further south down the river.

I visited, Mahoneys' crossing, I found an old dilapidated bridge, with a huge oak tree, six feet from the bank of the river, I got cold chills that ran down my spine.

I just knew that my uncle Jess had been here before.

Marla, LOL, not quite, unless you count the chick that went to Florida. I did encounter one in south Lousiana, at the shipping grave yard once though.We had just moored a disabled tug,that was being taken out of service.I was walking over to the little office, when out of the reeds growing at the waters edge, I spotted a baby gator, about four feet long. No stopping to kiss it, no hellos, no hand shake, afraid this ole boy just wanted distance, and the sooner the better.

Farila, did my sister send you here? LOL. I was skipped a grade, ended up in the same classes with my older sister, she was not appreciative, I obliged, with as much orneriness as i could possibly muster. Studies came easy for me as I never did any, I used the osmosis approach.I was always smaller than my peers, but quicker, so sports was an outlet to shine. People are stunned when out matched by a smaller but quicker opponent. Track, boxing, and soccer,over seas, stateside, I was considered too small for most coaches then, played base ball, and had more inside the park homers than most of the heavy hitters. My senior year of high school I grew 6.5 inches, much to the surprise of all my class mates.

Amy, what a great question, there are so many. Mark Twain and Will Rogers at the same table,with Earl Nightingale, and Muhamed Ali, would be a blast. At another table, Idi Amin, Al Sharpton, Hitler, Sahdam Husein, along with Ghandi and Martin Luther King, now that would be a lively conversed table.
I guess we would have to serve crow for some, steaks for others, and beer for me.

Located on the Mediterranean Sea to the north, beautifully landscaped with all types of vegetation, plat flowers, thriving with life, and beautiful people, To the south, the wonders of the Sahara Desert, huge sand dunes, a constant change of wind swept sand.
A country rich in little know history, from Leptis Magna . a famous Phonecian trading port, I have been all around this ampitheater.
To Tobruk, a site where the British surrendered to Rommel, a significant turning point in history for the American involvement. Roosevelt and Churchill, came to an agreement over a lunch, after Churchill received a telegram of the surrender. Roosevelt committed the Sherman tanks for his use. The blood stained wall had a definite impact on me.

aLia, I was not inspired as much a searching for an outlet to rid my self of the demons of the nightmares that were haunting my sleep. I found that after I expressed my self, of my emotions that I was feeling, from a traumatic accident that had happened, it released something inside of me that freed me up to be able to sleep again for the first time in over ten years. It wasn't a who but a what, I almost stopped after I was able to sleep, then I read a post by Mis Rae at .http://myweathervane.blogspot.com/ .

Sometimes in our lives things just happen, things that are a coincendental mystery that just slaps us in the face. We don't quite know how to react, or are afraid to.

Your first memory of a birthday party, a summer vacation at the lake, that time at Christmas when you got everything you wanted.

A good friend can spark memories that have been hidden for a very long time, you may want to laugh or you may want to cry, which ever way it goes it is probably exactly what you need for the moment.

I have always believed more in choices than fate. You are where you are, doing what you want to do, because you choose to. This is one of my mantras.

I have had many things happen to me in the last few months, and I just wanted to take a moment here to thank you all. one or two of you may have made me break down like a baby and cry, I know, but yes I get emotional just like any one else at times, and a good cry is not a bad or unmanly thing. More often than not though, you have made me smile, you have stroked my ego, and made just feel so good.

This has been a hard post to write.
Some of you may have noticed I haven't been by as much lately.
I have been on the e-mail with a few of you though.
This time of year is always hard on me, so my post may be a little slower than normal for a while.

I am working on a screenplay story.
My Uncle died on Thanksgiving.
I am trying to figure out my mothers affairs, as she has dementia, or alzheimers,
and everything is crazy here right now.
I LOVE YOU ALL
so don't lose patience with me, I did however post a blog on the plainolebob site though.

THANKS CLEM NICE EATS

Ok so I went to diner with Clem not long ago.

He likes steak, so I told him to meet me for lunch at one of those local steak houses.

When I got there, Clem had not yet arrived. So I found a good table by the window, ordered a coffee and waited. About ten minutes later he showed up.

He was full of news about what was going on in the neighborhood, he always has the best gossip, funny how them mailmen never miss nothin.

I realized as we were talkin that I hadn't pulled a prank on Clem for a long time, now would be as good a time as any.

We usually pay for our own lunch, so I needed an idea on how to get Clem to pick up the tab, with out just asking. My prank mode is kickin in.

I noticed that Clem knew a ton of people, as they would all stop by the table and say hi, my idea is born.

We order our food, and I order much more than usual, Clem, noticed, as he remarked, man you must really be hungry today Mr.Bob.

Yep, worked real hard today on that back yard, moved some dirt, and burned some brush, I must have really built up an appetite.

We finished our meal and Clem ordered another coffee, I told him that I really need to get back to that yard and make sure that the fire completely burned out.

Clem, always waves at anyone that waves at him.

So when I get to the cashier, I tell her that today is my birthday, and that fellow over at that table over ther is paying for my lunch.

She asks me which one, I smile at Clem, wave real big, yeah thats him, the guy thats wavin.

Thanks Clem I really enjoyed lunch, I chuckle on my way out.

It's that time of year that we all give thanks.

Here are a few things that I am thankful for, or maybe not.

That is the question.

I am thankful for memories of a good strong economy, the days when you did not hear recession or depression.
I am thankful that I am not a turkey, they hang around, git fed. then cooked and carved up, eaten, have jokes made of em, lol dig in.
I am thankful for all those little envelopes they send with the bills I owe, I mean I pay most everything on line any way, so I never have a shortage of envelopes.
I am thankful for our Veterans, that keep our country safe, and our freedom intact.
I am not thankful for terrorist that threaten us in the first place.
I am thankful that I live in a country that I can even express in the same breath what I am, or am not thankful for.
I am thankful for having roads to travel on, except when they are full of pot holes and hazards.
I am thankful for aluminum cans, as they have provided an income for so many.
I am thankful for laughter, as it keeps me sane.
I am thankful for tears, as they release my pain.
I am thankful for women, yall keep me smilin.
I am thankful for breweries, yall keep me talkin
I am thankful for fish, yall keep me lyin
Most of all I am thankful for family and friends, and I have plenty to be thankful for, my children, the clan, my blogger friends, my IRS buddies,a home to live in, food to eat, and a plot that is already paid for.
It is really hard to tell anyone and everyone, what I am and am not thankful for, there are so many things to be thankful for, for me that it is ridiculous, especially when I know that there are so many out there hurting, be thankful for what you have, and help someone that may be a little less fortunate than you, regardless of how little you have to share.

Bubba Buys Billy Ray A Pop

Bess is still at her brothers.
Talkin bout her brothers, I ever told ya'll how stoopid they are?

Well just in case I forgot, I'll tell you another little story that will prove my point.

Bubba, likes to play those one dollar lottery things, and really who doesn't.
He always buys the ticket then waits around for the little ping pong balls to come outta, that blowin thing with the numbers.
If he wins any thing, mostly a couple bucks, he buys more tickets and does the same thing over again.
Bubba does this ever Wednesday, and Friday without fail.

Any way, they had the drawing and Bubba knew he had one of the numbers. He was busy, in the middle of fixin his truck an all, so, he asked his brother Billy Ray, if he would go down an cash em in.
Billy Ray, says sure, will you buy me a pop. Ok then I'll go.

Bubba knows , Billy Ray is a little slow, so, he tells him, if any of the tickets are winners, just bring em back an I'll deal with em later, but one of em , this one right here, I already know it has a wining number on it, so use this one, to git your pop, and if there is some left over on it, git me more tickets, ok?

Billy Ray understood, so he takes off for the store.
He walks in, an tells the guy, hey, I'm cashin in this here ticket for my brother, he said I could have a pop out of it, and if anything extra on it git more tickets.
The guy said ok then.
Billy Ray got his pop and went on home.

He went up to Bubba, gave him his paper bag, and the other tickets, Bubba said, any of these winners, Billy Ray turned red, he had forgot to have em checked, when he told Bubba , Well Bubba got mad, for just a minute.
He looked in the bag and said "WHAT the hell is this"
Billy Ray, said I dunno, just what ever was left over from your winnin ticket, didn't they put the change in there.

Yeah, the change is in here, and how damn many tickets is this. Billy Ray said I dunno, just know it took bout thirty minutes to print em all outs all.

So Bubba calls that little store, and asked that ole boy how many tickets did I win , sure looks like a lotta tickets here.
Yep, nineteenthousandninetynine of em, woulda been one mor cept Billy Ray got that pop there.

Bess' Brother Jesse Gits Married

You know Bess comes from the hill country, an up yonder in them hills, when a boy turns eighteen, he is spected to git a job, help the family out, or just plain git married an move down the road.
When Bess' brother, Jesse, just before he turned eighteen, went to their paw, an asked what he should do in findin a woman to git married.

His paw tole him, you just go out yonder an find the ugliest wowman, what you can find.

So. Jesse, looked and looked, till he found the ugliest that he could find.

They got married an his family was real proud.

A year went by an Jesse, came to his paw. Paw, this ugly thing is wearin a little thin. I can't git eggsited no more, she's just too ugly, whut should I do.
Paw said, ain't no problem, take her to the city and find one them plastick face doctors, he'll fix her right up.
You sure paw, yep, had your moma fixed, and it werked out just fine.

So, jesse took his bride to the city to the plastick face doctor.
So, Doc, you think you can fixer up?
Oh yeah son, no problem.

Whatcha gonna do, make her nose, wider, shorter, a smaller, or less pointed, or what?

Well, I thought I'd start by puttin her nose between her eyes first.

Traveling Brothers Of Bess Ain't Too Brite Neither

Man, Bess is gonna be so mad at me when she gits back,tellin all these stories on her family.

She has two of the dumbest brothers I have ever met in my life.

We were stayin at the ole family farm, and kept hearing this "tip, tip, tippity tap" noise all night long, it was comming from that ole barn out there.

So, in the mornin I asked, Billy Joe, and Bobby Ray, what the hell all the noise was, all night long.They said "come on down to the barn and we'll show you our little project."

So, I went down to the barn and I could not believe my eyes.
They had all this metal, a ton of welding equipment, a couple of old tractors, a few old cars, and barrels of fuel.

They told me that last night they were building a fuel tank for this here rocket, they is buildin.
Man, it is impressive, bout 20feet in diameter, all kinds of wiring and such, complete with this here nose cone and ever thin.

I asked, Billy Joe, and Bobby Ray, where you boys planni on goin in this here rocket ship, no ways.
They tole me they was a goin to the Sun, in a very excited manner.
I said "the Sun"!!! Now you boys know that is the hottest thing we know about, hell it will melt that there space ship a fore you even git close to it."

Now I know you boys aren't that stoopid, have you even thought about that?

Billy Joe, now he's the smartest of the two, he spoke up real loud, cause I think it made him mad and all.

"Bob, you must really think we're stoopid or sumthin, we've thought this whole thing out and ever thin, thats the reason, we are leavin in the middle of the night, before the Sun even comes up."

Bess, is still outta town so I'll tell you a little story she told me about her three aunts one time.

Her aunst Sarry , Ida Bell, and Onie, well are widowed and lived together in this big ole two story house'

They wer sittin in the parlor down stairs.

When Sarry said, "I'm gittin tired think I'll go on up and start the bath and go to bed." So she went up the stairs, started the bath water.
"Now, I can't remember, was I gittin in the bath, or outta the bath."

Ida Bell and Onie heard her debating with herself.
Ida Bell says " poor dear I had better go and check on poor Sarry" so she rises and goes up the stairs.

She gits to the landing, and says " was I going up the stairs or down the stairs, up or down."

Onie says out loud " I hope I never git like the two of you", and knocks on wood.

An Early Note From Bess

I was so thrilled the way the awards thing came out, I just wanted to take this time to thank-you all.
If for any reason you wante to make a selection and simply missed it because I posted, please let me know, and I will rectify it. We love all of you and would not want you to be upset.
That said, I will now let you know a little more about Bob and I, we have had so many e-mails with questions, so , here goes.

Yes, Bob really did live at sea. In fact I wish he would write about it more. It was a tough, rough time in our lives, as he was gone on so many trips and gone for long periods of time.

No, Bob never ever, thought about becoming a minister, at any time, can you just imagine what the sermons would be about, or how they would be paraphrased, I just can not.

Yes, Bob really does all of the remodeling himself, and yes it is very professional work, of course I may have a gun at my head while I am typing this, just kidding, no need to call 911, I truly enjoy the new up dated bathroom, kitchen, and dining room. Now praying for some mishap, I really would like a sewing room,lol.

No, Bob is not writing a book an the "adventures of Mr.Bob", I do not know where that rumor started, but ever since he read that one, he has tried to really take on the Mr. Bob . "persona", amusing, at times.

Yes, we are really simple people, in that we live with in our means and enjoy mostly normal simple things in life.

We are both fairly easy going, if there is a temper, it is mine. I must admit Bob, tolerates much more than I do.

No, Bob, is not a gun toting drunk, lol, can not find where that came from. He does hunt, and he does enjoy a beer, but he is not, nearly as bad about it as he writes.

Well, unless there are any more questions about us right now, I have to get ready to go to Coras' for her birthday, oh, yes and no, Bob and Cora get along, at times. Better to keep them separated from each other.

I am writing this a little early, because I need to get on the road. I will be back by Thursday.

Some Behind The Scenes Information About Mr.Bob from Bess! ! !

Alright, some behind the scenes looks and glimpses from around here.
Bob, just wrote a story on the other site, about the Christmas decorations. Believe it or not, lol, this actually happened, except Bob left out a few details,

Detail no.1. it took him much longer to figure out the operations on how to make the motors make the movements.

Detail no. 2. he fell off the roof three times while he was hooking the wiring up, he broke his arm the second time, but he is way to stubborn to just forget about his toy creations.

Detail no.3. there was no storm, Clem pulled the prank on him, and re-rigged everything while Bob was hunting.

Detail no.4. the angels look more like ugly nuns, and the snow men like cammo dressed hunters, he even put some alligators in with this group, complete with the Elf hats.

Detail no.5 all of the lights do not work, and he over loaded all of the circuts and kept blowing the breakers, so he hooked it all up to a gas generator.

Now you know some of the behind the scene details the Bob, quite conveniently forgets, not to mention the mess he makes doing all of this.

Oh and the story about the bathroom, well now that is a totally different matter all together.

Comments Don't You Just Love Em----Bess Reads Them All.

Hi Ya'll,
Bess here, and I would like to talk about the comment section of blogs, from bloggers.

I have grown to know many of you by reading the comment section, not only here, but on many of your blog sites, Some of the comments I have enjoyed so much on other sites, that I have actually, clicked on the comment, and gone to visit that site,

A nice comment is like a breath of fresh air, the post script, that anyone looks forward to. In fact, Bob , calls it the heart beat of the blog.
So many of you e-mail him, and he asks me for advice on some, but he is fairly sound, he answers every one of those e-mails. They have all come from the comment section.

Some times the comment section is as amusing as the blog it self, I love going back and seeing who takes the time to answer their comments, Bob, told me that a fellow blogger, from South America, had pointed out to him, early on, how important comments were.

Turning the page now.
I still have not found out the reason that I received the new bathroom, but I had fun this week visiting all the bath shops. I got to purchase, needed towels, and new accessories, all the little knick knacks that drive Bob crazy, LOL. Since the shower is a stand alone, with the glass door, there was not a need for a shower curtain, I miss the shower curtain.

Bob, also put in all the little, hold on to, handicap handles. he said we will need these some day. Probably sooner than later too.
His mother has what he calls, "old timers", which is really advanced dementia, and he had put all the handicap items around her house years ago, they are really coming in handy now.
